A major concern about medical tourism with most Americans is the quality of the facilities, care, and expertise they will receive abroad. Some envision a scene out of a horror movie, others see wild animals roaming around the hospital, and some don’t take the time to envision it at all because it is something they just won’t consider. In reality, international hospitals and doctors are just as qualified, just as sanitary, just as high-tech as hospitals based in the U.S.
A study by Health Affairs indicates that the quality of care provided by these physicians is no different from that provided by physicians trained at U.S. medical schools. In fact, among the three groups of doctors studied (U.S. born and trained, U.S. born but internationally trained and internationally born and trained) internationally born and trained doctors had the lowest death rates.
Although many international doctors were born and trained internationally, many were also trained in the U.S., Canada or the U.K. So, for those who believe American doctors are the best the world has to offer, the same medical schools that trained U.S. doctors have also trained international ones, some even practiced in the U.S. before deciding to share their expertise abroad. Many international doctors also remain Board Certified in the U.S., which according to Health Affairs, is associated with lower mortality and shorter hospital stays.
As for the hospitals these international doctors work in? Many of the them are accredited by some of the same accreditation bodies as U.S. hospitals, which hold them to the highest sanitation, management and care standards. The hospitals are generally in state-of-the-art facilities and are equipped with some of the latest technology available, just like in the U.S.
Now for the quality care offered. Do you enjoy staying in four and five-star hotels? Of course you do. Do you enjoy being waited on hand and foot? Of course you do. Do you enjoy being able to relax and recover for as long as you feel needed? Of course you do. Relaxation and recovery is a huge concern in other countries. Rather than pushing you out the door, they take their time getting you back to being fully recovered, making sure you are completely comfortable along the way.
